Can real strategy games work on a phone?
For years the answer to 'can strategy work on mobile' was a polite no. Too many units, too small a screen, too many fiddly menus. But interface design has quietly caught up, and some of the best strategy on any platform now lives in your pocket.
Tide Command is the game that changed my mind. It handles a genuinely complex naval campaign with nothing but taps and pinches, mostly because it separates planning from execution. You lay out your whole turn calmly, then watch it play out.
The lesson other designers should steal is that a small screen forces clarity. When you can't fit everything on screen at once, you have to decide what actually matters. The best mobile strategy games are often cleaner than their PC cousins because of it.
Give the genre a chance if you wrote it off years ago. Start with something that eases you in, and be patient through the tutorial — the payoff is real.
